Next Match Against VOB St. Pat's

Thursday, 9 May 2013

Saturday's match will be played at Village of the Branch St Pat's at 12:20. Please arrive 1/2 hour prior to kick off. That would be 11:50am at the latest. We will be wearing our gold jerseys, please bring the silver as well.

The field is behind St. Patrick's Church and School at 284 E. Main St. Smithtown, NY 11787.

Directions: Route 347 (Nesconset Hwy) to Terry Rd (the Watermill Catering is on left; a Big Pharmacy is on right) and make a right going northbound to Route 25. Make a left on 25 (also referred to as E. Main St). St. Patricks School/Church is on the left about 100 yards.

It's Players' Weekend

Thursday, 25 April 2013

Keep in mind that it's Players' Weekend, so during the match against Kings Park we will observe the guidelines sent out by Long Island Junior Soccer League.

The guidelines are quite simple:

  1. Spectators are encouraged to listen for communication among the players and cheer (not instruct) for good plays by either team. Negative comments about any player or official are to be avoided.
  2. Coaches are asked to refrain from the constant barrage of instruction during the course of the game.
  3. Referees and coaches will acknowledge substitutions by having players standing at the halfway line ready to go in.

The goals are for a more enjoyable experience for all:

  1. Develop our players thinking and creative ability to make decisions on the field without constant sideline intervention.
  2. Improve the players’ ability to communicate with each other on the field by reducing the outside noise level.
  3. Support ALL of our referees by eliminating ALL sideline dissension and intervention.

In reality, every weekend should be Players' Weekend. Let's remember that it's our children who are out there on the field doing their best to play a game that they enjoy. Let's not ruin it for them by shouting negative things at them from the sidelines. That goes for Coaches and Parents!

Next Match Away Versus Kings Park

Saturday, 20 April 2013

Our next match will be played away at Kings Park. If you've traveled with us to Kings Park before, it's the same field we've been to before. There is a push-pin for Tiffany Fields at the old Kings Park Psychiatric Center on our field map (link above).

Location: Tiffany Fields Kings Park
Day: Saturday April 27
Kickoff time: 2:20
Meeting time: No later than 1:50
Opposition: Kings Park
Uniform: Gold

Be sure to regular check the calendar for any changes in the schedule. This week the Wednesday practice at FJC will be concluding at 7:30pm because of a special visit by the Stony Brook University soccer team.

Strikers Win!

Saturday, 20 April 2013

Good job on the win today everyone! While the score worked out in our favor, we were most pleased with how the boys played. They followed our instructions and implemented the game plan. Everyone should be proud.

Also we've handed out the reward patches to acknowledge all the hard work that each of the players have been putting in to improve their skills. The patches are iron-on, so we've suggested to the boys that they pick a practice jersey (NOT the game jersey as LIJ does not allow patches on game jerseys) to put the patch on. Wear them at practice with pride! Since last week, our team skill level has gone from 2.2 to 2.4. Our target is to get the team to level 3. If all of us practice individually, then we'll play together better as a team.

Remember, Coach Rafael wants everyone to do 100 repetitions of wall ball per day. That's the next Skill Assessment that we'll be doing. That's Skill 10 - 13 on the iSoccer list: First Touch and Passing with preferred and non-preferred foot.

Next Wednesday

Thursday, 18 April 2013

We're doing something special next Wednesday, the 24th. The Stony Brook University soccer team will be working with the Strikers from 6:30 to 7:30pm. So our practice will run an hour longer than normal. From 5:00pm to 6:00pm Coach Donavan will be available to do Skills Assessments for the boys that wish to challenge their scores and raise their Skill Level. At 6:00pm Coach Rafael will train the boys until the Stony Brook soccer team arrives.

Wall Ball

Thursday, 18 April 2013

Coach Rafael wants all the boys to work on their ball control. One good way to improve your ball control skills is to pass the ball to a wall. The ball hits the wall and comes back to your foot. Now that the weather is getting nicer, try to find a place where you can play "wall ball" every day. Coach Raphael wants everyone to play the ball off the wall at least 100 times with each foot. Get kicking!

Soccer Skills Rewards Program

Wednesday, 17 April 2013

I've written an explanation of the Soccer Skills Rewards Program we're using to help encourage the boys to work on their soccer skills at home. As explained in that document, players may earn Player Points by practicing their skills at home. They should record their practice on the Skills Reward Sheet that we provide to them. A third reward sheet covering Basic Ball Control Level 2 is now available. All the skills listed are demonstrated on the training page (look for the link above). We will go over all these skills at the Tuesday Foot Skills Clinic. When the sheet is full, the player should hand it in to Coach Donavan who will then award the Player Points.

If you are missing a Reward Sheet, here is a list of the ones presently available:

  1. Basic Ball Control Level 1
  2. Juggling
  3. Basic Ball Control Level 2

Soccer Summer Camps

Wednesday, 17 April 2013

More on Juggling

Tuesday, 16 April 2013

We went over the basics of juggling last Tuesday. Hopefully everyone has been working on their juggling this past week. Here's some more instructions about how to juggle that will help you to improve your high score.

Friendly Scrimmage on Saturday

Thursday, 11 April 2013

We will play a friendly scrimmage with a Sound Beach Boys U10 team this coming Saturday, the 13th. Kickoff is at 11:45 at Prodell Middle School, 100 Randall Road, Shoreham. Please arrive at the field by 11:15 am for warm-ups. Since we're playing away, please wear the gold jerseys.

Homework

Tuesday, 9 April 2013

I'll be handing out a Juggling Homework Sheet today at the Foot Skills Clinic. Homework sheets from last week should be handed in at any of this week's practices. Player points will be awarded for completing the homework assignment.

Strikers Win!

Sunday, 7 April 2013

The team played well yesterday and showed great character to come from behind to take the victory. Keep up the great work! Scores and standings have been posted on the appropriate pages on this site.

Toe Taps and Juggling

Friday, 5 April 2013

We sent home a progress slip with every player which lists their current Player Points and their Player Level. Our target is to get all the players to Level 3 as quickly as possible. We would like to challenge every player to be able to do at least 50 Toe Taps in 20 seconds. Once you get that, then work on your Juggling. For this age group, each player should be able to reach 5 juggles for each foot. Several of our players are already in the double digits. So we know you can do it!

Homework

Wednesday, 3 April 2013

Yesterday, the boys received the Level 1 Homework Sheet which they can use to track their at home practice. I (Coach D) will collect the homework sheets next Tuesday. Each player will be give extra Player Points depending on how much of the sheet is filled in. Please remember that the sheet is only for recording what you do outside of the regularly scheduled team practices. It will only take 20 minutes per day.

Today, we have the team training at FJC with Coach Rafael at 5pm. I will be to the field early (4:45 pm) if any player wants to do their Change of Direction Skills Assessment today.

Our team goal is to get every player to Level 3. Currently we have three player who are already at Level 3. Eight players are at Level 2. And we have four players on Level 1. If you are still on Level 1, it is very important that you come to the Tuesday Foot Skills Clinic. I've designed the curriculum for the Skill Clinic to improve our players' Basic Ball Control, Dribbling, and Passing Skills. These are essential skills for play at the Travel level.

Foot Skills Week 2

Tuesday, 2 April 2013

We will be continuing with Ball Ball Control Level 1 today. We'll go over each of the skills again and make sure everyone knows how to perform them correctly.

You can use the Level 1 Homework Sheet to record your activities for the week. Hand in the sheet to Coach D at the following Tuesday Foot Skills Clinic to get credit for your hard work.

If you are using iSoccer.org at home, you should enter your activities there to get extra Player Points.

West Islip on Saturday

Monday, 1 April 2013

Our next match is away against the West Islip Warriors at 3:20pm this coming Saturday, the 6th. Here is the address and directions:

Address: Masera Fields (650 Udall Rd). Directions: If coming from the west, Sunrise Highway to Udall Road Exit 40. Turn left at light to go north on Udall Rd. If coming from the east, Sunrise Highway to Udall Road Exit 41. Turn right to go north on Udall Rd. Masera Fields are 1/4 mile on the left. We will be playing on the field closest to the parking lot.

Player Points

Thursday, 28 March 2013

We will continue with our baseline Skills Assessment today. Coach D will be at the FJC field 15 minutes early for anyone who wishes to either challenge their previous skill score or continue on with the dribbling skills. All the scores gathered yesterday have been entered into the iSoccer system and we're looking pretty good as a team. We are at Level 2 presently. For our age group, our team level should be Level 3. With practice, we can get there.

We are using a Player Point system to reward players for good behavior and sportsmanship. If you login to iSoccer.org, you'll see that you have a certain number of Player Points. Coaches can give you additional points. Also, if a player misbehaves during practice, doesn't listen, or doesn't put in the expected effort, coaches can take Player Points away.

You can also earn extra Player Points by posting your soccer activities to your user account. Also, you can enter your own scores for the various Skills. Even watching a soccer match will earn you a few points.

Presently, our team leader for Player Points is S.B. (#43) with 12,310. Congratulations! Keep up the good work.

Skills Assessment

Wednesday, 27 March 2013

Just a reminder, Coach Rafael will be training the boys today at FJC. Any boys who come early to practice will be able to do their Skills Assessment for this week. Right now we are doing Toe Taps and Inside / Inside (called "Foundations" in iSoccer.org's training program). Time permitting, the boys can get a head start on their Skills Assessment by practicing at home. We'll be doing juggling, change of direction, and change of pace moves over the next couple of weeks. If you are playing at home with iSoccer.org, you'll be able to enter scores yourself. All the boys are entered into the system already, so when you attempt to register, you should confirm you already belong to the Strikers. The Striker's team code is 676313, for your reference.

Practice This Week

Tuesday, 26 March 2013

Today, during our first Foot Skills Clinic, 5 to 6:30pm at JAE, we will be going over the 10 basic ball control skills and showing the boys what their daily individual practice routine should look like. Next, we'll work on receiving and controlling the ball (essential for game play). We will then work on 1v1 skills. The last third of the practice will be 3v3 small sided games.

Wednesday at FJC, Coach Rafael will continue training the boys in 1v1 skills and group play.

Thursday, we will continue with Coach Rafael's training plan and work on set plays (kickoff, corner kicks, free kicks , throw-ins, etc.).

Strikers Win!

Sunday, 24 March 2013

The Strikers won the first match of the 2012-2013 clausura defeating the Mount Sinai Rangers by 5 goals to nil.

This coming week most of our players will be training with the East End Soccer Academy at their Spring Break Camp at Diamond in the Pines.

Despite school being on spring recess, we will continue regular team practices this week.

EESA Spring Break Camp

Friday, 15 March 2013

We recommend you consider participating in the EESA Spring Break Camp. Several of our boys have trained with EESA over the winter and benefited greatly. Registration is open. The cost for the week is $100. If we can get enough boys from out team to register, then they would train us as a team.

Dates: Monday 25 - Friday 29 March
Time: 9 - 12pm
Location: Diamond In The Pines turf field, Coram

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Thursday, 14 March 2013

If you plan on marching with the team in the St. Patrick's Day parade, the following information should prove invaluable.
Location: Parkside South (The south side of Parkside on 25A). Stake #8 Road closes at noon, it is highly recommended to get there no later than 11:45am. Please dress warm and wear your uniforms on top. Remember every child must have an adult in order to march.

Parent Meeting Today After Practice

Thursday, 14 March 2013

Please plan to stick around for ten to fifteen minutes after practice today. We (the coaches) have some things to tell you about. And we'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Today's Foot Skills Clinic Cancelled

Tuesday, 12 March 2013

The weather gods are not cooperating with our practice schedule. The field conditions are only barely acceptable yesterday, and have deteriorated today. Even if the rain miraculously stops at 5pm, the field will be mud soup. HOWEVER! All the boys should practice the basic ball control skills shown in the video on the training page. Also, you can sign up for iSoccer to keep track of your progress.

Next week there will be no Foot Skills Clinic. We will resume with the Tuesday Foot Skills on Tuesday the 26th. Yes, that's during Easter break, but if you are around and want to kick the ball around then we'll be there. assuming we don't get rained out.

See you tomorrow at FJC for our first practice with our trainer, Coach Rafael Morais.

P.S. Consider watching one of the UEFA Champions League matches this afternoon. Both matches are in their second leg. Barcelona is taking on AC Milan. Turkey's Galatasaray is facing Germany's Schalke, the home club of US MNT player Jermaine Jones. (Who, btw, scored late in the last match to tie up the series.)

Personal Training

Tuesday, 12 March 2013

We would like to boys to work on their basic ball control skill at home as well as when they are at practice. By spending twenty minutes per day reenforcing and practicing the basic skills, they will be better prepared for practice, and get more out of group play. I've added a video to our training page that demonstrates how to do the 10 basic ball control exercises. You should do the moves in this video every day.

Spring is here!

Monday, 11 March 2013

Now that LIJ has released our schedule, we have a complete list of matches. We'll play 9 league matches and at least 1 Long Island Cup match. That Long Island Cup match is this coming Saturday. It's a home game (see below for more details). If we win that match, Round 2 of the LI Cup will be on the 13th of April. The schedule and standings links above have been updated as of this morning to reflect the new season.

We are in full practice mode right now. The first Foot Skills practice is tomorrow (Tuesday) at JAE. Wednesday and Thursday practices are at FJC. Unfortunately, we might have to make last minute changes because of weather, so please keep an eye on this space for announcements about weather related cancellations. Note: next week, 19 March, there is NO Tuesday Foot Skills.

Calendar Update for Spring 2013

Saturday, 9 March 2013

The Strikers' spring schedule is on the calendar (link above). Make sure you subscribe to the calendar so that updates automatically show up on your computer calendar or smart device. Here are the links: XML or iCal. The XML feed will probably work with most computers. If you use iCal or an iPhone, the iCal link should work for you.

LI Cup First Round

Friday, 8 March 2013

Date: March 16th
Game Time: 1:10 PM
Location: Frank J . Carisiti
Opponent: Great Neck Strikers
(Wear silver jersey, bring the gold)

Today's Practice Cancelled

Thursday, 7 March 2013

Because of the wind and rain / snow, today's practice is being called off. Stay inside. Stay warm.

Today's Practice Cancelled

Wednesday, 6 March 2013

We have just heard from our trainer who has indicated that practice will not be taking place today because of concerns about the weather. So you need not travel to the Wedge today.

We have not yet made any decision concerning tomorrow's practice. Assume we are practicing tomorrow unless we make an announcement to the contrary. Keep your eye on this space for any updates.

Practice Starts Today (Weather Permitting)

Wednesday, 6 March 2013

I know you all are excited to get back to regular outdoor soccer practice, and so are we. Today is the first day of our spring practice schedule. If you've been following the developments here, you will know that the RP Athletic Director has asked us not to use the FJC fields until they dry out. So we will meet at the Wedge in Mt Sinai (aka Heritage Park) at 5pm and see if we can't find some grass to practice on. Our new trainer, Coach Rapheal will be there to lead the practice.

We (the coaches) will keep an eye on the weather developments today. If anything changes, something will be posted here, so check back if you are in doubt as to what we are doing today.

Winter Futsal Season a Success!

Friday, 1 March 2013

With the win yesterday to close out our first season in the Long Island Youth Futsal League, we finished with a record of 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw. The boys who elected to participate all had a good time and enjoyed the experience of playing this faster paced game that demands the most of a player's footskills. We hope that more players will join us next winter.

Outdoor Practice Next Week at the Wedge

Friday, 1 February 2013

The RP School Athletic Director has requested that we not use the school fields until the week of the 11 March. The fields are still too wet and the powers-that-be fear we will kill the grass. We are presently trying to make arrangements to have our outdoor practices next week at the "Wedge" in Mt Sinai. Even if we don't get permission, we will still meet at the Wedge on Wednesday and grab whatever space with can.

One More Futsal Match on Sunday

Wednesday, 27 February 2013

CONFIRMED: The organizer of the LI Futsal league contacted us and informed us that they scheduled us for one more match. We are scheduled to play Newfield Young Guns on Sunday at 10am. The match is at Dawnwood MS.

Practice Begins March 6th

Tuesday, 26 February 2013

Regular outdoor practice will resume next Wednesday (March 6th) at FJC. The practice schedule is on the calendar (see link above). If you have a smart device, you can subscribe to the calendar. Here's a summary:

Tuesday, 5 to 6:30pm (optional / recommended skills clinic)
Wednesday, 5 to 6:30pm (mandatory w/ trainer)
Thursday, 5 to 6:30pm (mandatory)

We will still have our scheduled Sunday indoor practice on March 3rd. Practice on the 10th and 17th will most likely be cancelled because of the LIJ Convention on the 10th and the St. Patrick's Day parade on the 17th.

No Practice Today

Saturday, 23 February 2013

We've decided the field conditions are not ideal for practice today. And besides it's supposed to be raining. We'll see some of you at the futsal match tomorrow.

Looking ahead, the first official practice with our new trainer will be Wednesday, 6 March at 5pm. Wednesday and Thursday practices will be a FJC. Tuesday "foot skills" will be at JAE.

Final Futsal Match

Monday, 18 February 2013

We will play our final futsal match next Sunday, 24 February, at 9 am at Dawnwood MS.

Sunday Practices

Friday, 15 February 2013

Because of the President's Week Holiday, the school will not be allowing us to use the gym for practices. So no Sunday practices on the 17th or the 24th. The LI Futsal matches will continue as scheduled. And we'll be playing four tournament matches Monday evening. See the schedule for details.

President's Day Tournament

Thursday, 14 February 2013

Our matches for the "Soccer for a Cure" President's Week Tournament hosted by the Lake Grove Soccer Club will be played between 5pm and 9pm on Monday, 18 February. The full schedule is posted the schedule page.

Unless there is a major thaw between now and Saturday, we won't be having Saturday outdoor practice. On Sunday we play a futsal match in the morning (10 am) and then we have practice at the RP HS Gym at 12:30pm. See you then, if not before.

President's Week Tournament

Tuesday, 12 February 2013

The Strikers are registered for the "Soccer for a Cure" President's Week Tournament hosted by the Lake Grove Soccer Club to be held at KK Athletics in Farmingville. We do not have the schedule yet, so we aren't sure which day we'll be assigned. In preparation though, each parent will need to fill out the waiver form to allow their child to play. Forms should be printed out and returned to Coach Joe along with your $10 participation fee.

All Practices and Games for this Weekend are Cancelled

Friday, 8 February 2013

Long Island Futsal has just informed me that they are canceling all matches this weekend. They will be rescheduled and played at a later date. So stay home and stay warm. See y'all went this blows over and thaws out.

Weekend Weather

Thursday, 7 February 2013

Outdoor practice on Saturday will likely be an impossibility. Also, the school has already issued a notice concerning weekend use of the gym and it appears that we won't have access to the RP HS Gym on Sunday. I'll monitor the situation and post an update when I know for certain what's happening.

Long Island Futsal has not cancelled anything yet. We have been directed to keep an eye on their web site for weather related changes to the futsal schedule. We are currently slated to play at 9am Sunday morning. Check this space for updates.

Saturday Practice

Saturday, 2 February 2013

Presently (8:30am) the outdoor thermometer at my house says 28°F. It's sunny out. At this point I don't see any reason to cancel practice. However, if you feel that it's too cold for your child, you can decide to skip practice. Otherwise, we'll see you at JAE at 12:30pm.

Sunday Futsal Schedule Addition

Wednesday, 30 January 2013

Long Island Youth Futsal has added a match to our schedule this coming Sunday, 3 February. We will be playing a match against Dv Academy DV 10 at 1pm. The location of that match will be at Centereach HS (not at Dawnwood MS). Centereach HS is adjacent (next door) to Dawnwood MS. It's the building just to the east of Dawnwood. You can even park in the same parking lot. As a result of this change, we will not be playing a match on the 24th of February. This means that we will NOT be able to have our indoor practice at the RP HS gym on that day.

We will still be playing the Newfield Young Guns on the 3rd of February at 4pm at Dawnwood MS.

Saturday Practice CANCELLED

Friday, 25 January 2013

The temperatures are supposed to be below freezing on Saturday the 26th so we'll skip the outdoor practice this week. See you at the futsal match on Sunday. The match is at 10am. Wear silver. Bring both jerseys (just in case).

Practice today. 12:30 pm

Saturday, 19 January 2013

It's a beautiful day! See you at the JAE field.

Update: MLK Day Tourney at KK

Thursday, 17 January 2013

The schedule for the MLK Day Tournament at KK Athletics in Farmingville is out. We will be playing Sunday evening, the 20th, between 5pm and 8pm. We will play 3 matches of 28 minutes each. I don't know if there will be a "championship" match or not. The schedule is on the team calendar or on the KK tournament web site.

The address is for KK Athletics is 755 Horseblock Road in Farmingville, New York.

If anyone needs a ride, let me know and we can coordinate some carpooling.

We will still have a practice on Saturday (weather permitting, check web site) at 12:30pm to 1:30pm at JAE. I would like to collect the waiver for the tournament on Saturday (if possible, Sunday morning at the latest) along with the $25 from each player to cover the team registration fee.

Our futsal match at Dawnwood MS is on Sunday morning at 11am. We are playing Stony Brook Rush.

Because of the tournament Sunday evening, we will not be having practice at the HS Gym (the gym might be close anyway for the holiday weekend).

MLK Day Tourney at KK

Monday, 14 January 2013

The Strikers are registered for the MLK Day (Monday, 21 January 2013) tournament at KK Athletics in Farmingville. We do not have a schedule yet. Each parent will need to fill out the waiver form to allow their child to play. Forms should be printed out and returned to Coach Donavan.

Practice starts this weekend

Friday, 11 January 2013

Tomorrow, we will have a one hour, outdoor practice, at JAE beginning at 12:30pm. We will go over tactical plans in preparation for tomorrow's futsal match. Sunday, we play against a Stony Brook team at 10:30am at Dawnwood MS. After that, at 12:30pm, we have an hour reserved in the Rocky Point HS gym. Please try to attend all the practices. If you can't make a practice or a game, please inform me (Coach Donavan).

Winter Futsal & Practice Schedule

Friday, 28 December 2012

We now have the schedule of play for our winter futsal league. All matches are on Sundays beginning 6 January 2013. All matches will be played at Dawnwood Middle School in Centereach (10 43Rd St. Centereach, NY 11720).

We also have practice time at the Rocky Point HS gym from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. We encourage all players, not just those participating in winter futsal to attend practice. (Yes, we realize that this is the same day as the match, but that is the practice slot we have been given. We either use it, or don't.)

Long Island Fustal Winter League

Wednesday, 26 December 2012

Waivers for Long Island Futsal need to be completed today. Once the waiver is filled out and paid for ($9.50) Long Island Futsal will issue the player's pass. I'll be picking up the player passes on Saturday, 29 December, so don't delay, act now!

LIF will be releasing our winter schedule on Friday the 28th. So check back here for that.

Winter Fustal League

Thursday, 20 December 2012

The Strikers will be playing in the Long Island Futsal League this winter. You can find out about this league from the Long Island Futsal web site. The pertinent information is summarized below:

Wednesday, 17 October 2012 at 4:07 pm

This coming Saturday, 20 October at 1:20 pm we play the 3rd place Elwood Wolves (3-2-0) at FJC in Rocky Point. The Strikers are currently in 6th place with a 1-2-2 record. We will be observing "Players Weekend" during this Saturday match. Spectators are encouraged to cheer (not instruct) for good plays by either team. Negative comments about any player or official are to be avoided. (As always!) Coaches will refrain from instructing the players during the course of the game. Referees will acknowledge substitutions by having players standing at the halfway line ready to go in.
